    Abstract:

Policymakers in Europe have recently started to focus on the relative underrepresentation of women on corporate boards, with many countries considering implementing gender quotas. The first quota law was adopted in  Norway in 2006. However, the studies using the Norwegian reform for evaluation have been criticized on methodological grounds. In this paper we use a novel set up in Sweden, where we make use of a credible threat of quotas in 2002 that dramatically increased the share of female board members, in order to circumvent these problems. For a random  sample of the universe of Swedish limited liability companies, we provide evidence that imposed quotas do not harm firm performance. At the moment we are collecting information on the universe of limited liability firms for further analysis.  (Presented at Research Institute of Industrial Economics  18/1-2016 and Stockholm University spring 2016 and Linnaeus University 2016.)
